As long as humans have been on the planet, they’ve been (   1   ) things consistently. There are some things humans have always done: eat, have sex, do some kind of worship of a god, and migrate, move around.

And so, migration – humans moving from place to place, country to country – is deeply embedded in us as a species. It is one of the fundamental parts of human life on the planet. Right now, there are many reasons for people to move. Access to things like health care, jobs, and money (   5   ) around the world. Still, the inequalities between humans are probably as great as they’ve ever been in history. That’s what’s happening right now. And it is affecting a lot of our politics. Movements against immigrants are popping up all over the world. So (   7   ) we’re seeing huge numbers of people moving and huge changes to politics around that migration. The central challenge is climate and making sure that we don’t destroy the earth. But rooted in that is the fact that a lot of people are going to move to a lot of new places and we are (   8   ) to figure out, as societies, how to create welcoming, multiracial, multiethnic, multilingual democracies that give dignity and equality to the stranger.

This has been a key aspect of politics in the USA, in the present and in history. There is the legacy of white supremacy and the oppression of Native American peoples. But (   9   ) of extremely difficult trial and error there was also a vision of a real welcoming and multiracial democracy.

Suketu Mehta has written essentially a kind of manifesto about his vision of America, about welcoming the stranger, with respect to immigration. Suketu immigrated here as a teenager, from India. 私たちは今、史上最大の人類移動の時代にいるのです。

これが今まさに起きている現実です。

そして、この現象は多くの政治に影響を与えています。

移民に反対する運動が世界中で広がっています。

つまり、移動が増える中で、移民を巡る政治が大きく変化しているのです。

主要な課題は気候変動です。

地球を破壊しないようにするためにはどうすればよいのかが問われています。

その根底には、多くの人々が新しい場所に移動するという現実があります。

私たち社会は、「多民族的、多文化的、多言語的な民主主義」を構築し、

移住者に尊厳と平等を与える方法を見つけなければなりません。

これは現在のアメリカ、そしてその歴史においても重要な課題です。

アメリカには、白人至上主義やネイティブ・アメリカンへの抑圧という過去があります。

しかし、その中でも「多民族的で包容的な民主主義」を目指すビジョンが存在してきました。

スケトゥ・メータ氏は、アメリカに関するビジョン――移民受け入れの重要性――を、

実質的にマニフェストとして書き上げています。

彼は10代の頃にインドからアメリカへ移住しました。

その経験を基に、アメリカを「見知らぬ者たちの土地」として描きました。
