Most people cite snakes as their biggest fear. But not far behind is public speaking. Yet sometimes there’s no escaping the dreaded microphone. Here are some tips to make you more relaxed and effective. First, though it sounds obvious, practice. Practice speaking anywhere – in your car, in your bedroom, in front of a mirror. This will help you when you’re on the spot. During your talk, stand tall and appear to be unafraid. In other words, don’t be yourself, but rather pretend to be an actor on a stage. When someone asks you a question, take a step toward them and look them in the eye. This will make you focus on the one-to-one exchange, as if you are just talking to one other person. Lastly, plan your conclusion and keep it short. Simply use a few sentences to summarize what you’ve said and finish. Forget those old jokes and famous quotations.
