In recent times, schools have conducted surveys among students to gather feedback on teachers’ classes, and then provided the results to the teachers.

The evaluations from students’ reports this year were as follows:

“The classes mainly focused on past exam questions from top-level universities like the University of Tokyo, and the questions were often too difficult for me to answer. I felt mentally overwhelmed.”

“The level of the classes was unusually challenging.”

“Using fluorescent colors or yellow on the slides makes it difficult to read, so please consider improving them.”

“In my three years of studying with my teacher, I achieved English grades that were not inferior to those of other students. I always had insights during the teacher’s classes. Because I have put considerable effort into English composition during classes, I believe I became capable of expressing myself without hesitation during exams.“

“The teacher’s classes were focused on pointing out areas where examinees tend to make mistakes, so I looked forward to every lesson.”

I am filled with reflection for the next academic year and a sense of achievement that my intentions were conveyed to the students.

I will turn both the positive aspects and areas for improvement into energy to enhance my skills.　

I cannot attract students through youth, and no matter how much knowledge I have, it does not necessarily reach the hearts of the students.

I sometimes envy teachers who can skillfully tease students like comedians, but trying to act that way isn’t sustainable.

One thing I can say is to keep creating original material.

Don’t just have students complete workbooks and read the answers in the teacher’s manual.

I believe that preparing original materials for each class can be an asset as a teacher.

最近の学校では、生徒に、教員の授業に対するアンケートを実施し、その結果を教員にフィードバックするようになっている。

今年の生徒からの通信簿はこんな感じだ。

「東大など最高峰のレベルの大学の長文がほとんどで、出来ない問題ばかりで、精神的に辛かった。易しめの大学も頻繁に挟んで欲しかった。」

「難易度が異常」

「スライドに蛍光色や黄色を使うと見にくいので改善して欲しい。」

「３年間の先生の授業で、英語だけは他の受験生に引けをとらない成績になりました。大抵どんな英文の演習でも初めましての知識があり、英作をかなり取り組んできたので、試験の時も全く身構える事なく書きたいことをそのまま書けるようになったと思います。」

「僕たちの視点にこだわり、工夫を凝らしてくださり、毎日英語の時間が楽しみだった。定期テストだけでなく、受験へ向けての覚え方を丁寧に、わかりやすく、教えていただき、とてもありがたかったです。」

次年度への反省と、意図したことが生徒に伝わっていたという達成感

良かったことも、反省点も、そのすべてをエネルギーに替えて、さらなるスキルアップを目指します。

若さで生徒をひきつけることはできないし、いくら知識があっても生徒の心まではとどくとは限らない。

お笑い芸人のように生徒を上手にイジれる教師がうらやましかったりもするけれど、無理して演じても続かない。

ひとつ言えることは、オリジナルのネタを作り続けること。

既存の問題をやらせて、指導書を読んで、で終わらせないこと。

それが教員としての資産となるように思う。
