To become a taxi driver in London, you must take what is called the Knowledge of London. According to the New York Times, “it has been called the hardest test, of any kind, in the world.” It is too difficult for about 70% of the test takers to pass.

The test covers all of the roads and landmarks in London. The person taking the test must know in detail some 25,000 streets covering about 32,000 kilometers. They will spend three to four years on preparation for the test. They must learn the best route to hospitals, theaters, parks, and other places. This is so they can offer excellent service when they give a ride to someone who is in a hurry. Prospective taxi drivers also need to watch out for areas that are under construction and other changes. If they make a mistake, they have to take the test again.

Drivers must also have a good eye for even the smallest details. One test taker was asked about a statue of mice eating a piece of cheese! After passing the test and getting their green badge, they can make a living as the driver of a “black taxi.” This will show that their knowledge of the London streets is second to none.

Some say that people needn’t take the trouble to pass such a difficult test. They say the old cab system is out of date because of GPS and navigation. Maybe so, but for the present, there are no plans to do away with the test.
